Karagedik Church: A Hidden History in the Heart of the Steppe

Introduction
Blending perfectly with the silent and mystical atmosphere of Aksaray, Karagedik Church is a Byzantine marvel carved into the rock, standing resilient against time. Unlike many other cave churches in the region, it boasts a more spacious design, making it one of the most striking historical remnants in the area. If you’re looking to dive deep into history, Viofun highly recommends adding this hidden treasure to your list.

General Information
Karagedik Church is located in the rural outskirts of Aksaray, at the foothills of the Melendiz Mountains. Believed to have been built in the 10th century, the church sets itself apart with its frescoes and unusually large interior. Though much of it has deteriorated over time, remnants of Biblical scenes can still be seen on the walls.

Things to Experience

Explore: Step inside the church and take time to observe the carved columns and the high, vaulted ceilings.

Observe: Pay close attention to the faded frescoes still visible on the interior walls—they offer a glimpse into centuries past.

Taste: Take a short break with fresh village bread and locally made cheese from nearby rural communities.

Viofun’s Tip
Plan your visit for the early morning hours. Since the church is in a relatively remote area, bringing water and snacks for the journey is a good idea. The surrounding natural scenery is also quite impressive—perfect for a short hike or a peaceful nature walk if you enjoy exploring on foot.
