Ephesus Archaeological Site (Izmir)
Ephesus Archaeological Site (Izmir)
When you stand in front of the Library of Celsus, you realize how silently yet powerfully time flows… The Ephesus Archaeological Site, located in the Selçuk district of İzmir, is world-renowned as one of the most important port cities of antiquity. Stretching from the theatre to the agora, from the library to the temples, this vast archaeological area is an open-air museum that welcomes millions of visitors every year.
With a history dating back to 6000 BC, Ephesus became a major center of trade and culture, especially during the Roman period. The city was home to the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Today, the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, the Temple of Hadrian, the Fountain of Trajan, and the marble streets reflect the pinnacle of ancient architecture. Ephesus is also significant for Christianity, as one of the seven churches mentioned in the Bible was located here.
Viofun’s Suggestion
We recommend visiting early in the morning. Walking on the marble streets while the sun is just rising feels like stepping into the past with the shadows as your companions. At the exit, you can visit the House of the Virgin Mary and complete the day with a sacred and historical route.
