An Ancient City Close to the Sky: Termessos

Introduction
Perched 1,000 meters above sea level on the peaks of the Taurus Mountains, Termessos is one of Antalya’s most captivating historical treasures. Often referred to as the “inaccessible city” due to its unique location, this ancient site awaits discovery with its dramatic setting and rich historical atmosphere. Its silent, untouched ruins make Termessos not only an archaeological wonder but also a peaceful retreat into nature.

General Information about Termessos
Located about 30 kilometers northwest of Antalya, Termessos was one of the most important cities in the ancient region of Pisidia. In 333 BCE, the city famously resisted the siege of Alexander the Great, preserving its independence. Its impressive fortifications, monumental structures, and strategic mountain location demonstrate the city's strength and resilience. The ruins from the Hellenistic and Roman periods still reflect the grandeur of its past.

Viofun’s Tip
Because Termessos is located in a rugged mountainous area, wearing comfortable hiking shoes and carrying plenty of water is essential. Early morning or cool weather visits will make your exploration more enjoyable. Situated within a national park, the site is also perfect for nature lovers. For an extended adventure, consider visiting Karain Cave, a nearby archaeological site that adds another layer to the historical journey.

How to Get to Termessos Ancient City

Termessos Ancient City is located within the Güllük Mountain National Park, about 30 kilometers from Antalya city center. There are several options for getting there:

By Private Vehicle
From Antalya, follow the D650 highway (Burdur Road). The drive takes approximately 40 minutes to reach the entrance of the national park. After entering the park, there is a 9-kilometer road accessible by car; however, the final section must be completed on foot via a hiking trail.

By Public Transport
You can take a minibus from the Antalya Intercity Bus Terminal (Otogar) heading toward Korkuteli. Get off at the Termessos junction. From there, you’ll need to walk or take a taxi to reach the site itself.

By Taxi or Private Transfer
For a more comfortable option, you can hire a taxi or arrange a private transfer from Antalya. This is especially convenient and cost-effective for groups traveling together.

Since Termessos is located at high altitude in a mountainous area, it's important to consider hiking conditions when planning your trip.
