Pergamon Acropolis (Izmir-Bergama)
Pergamon Acropolis (Izmir-Bergama)
Once home to the world’s greatest library… The Pergamon Acropolis Archaeological Site, located in the Bergama district of İzmir, served as the administrative and cultural center of the ancient Kingdom of Pergamon. With its temples, theatre, palace remains, library, and magnificent colonnaded terraces, the Acropolis presents visitors with both the power and elegance of antiquity. Its elevated location also offers a breathtaking panoramic view.
In the 3rd century BC, Pergamon became the capital of the Pergamon Kingdom and developed into one of the leading centers of science and art in the ancient world. The Temple of Athena, the Temple of Trajan, the Temple of Dionysus, the steepest theatre in the world, palace remains, and the famed Pergamon Library—said to have housed more than 200,000 volumes—still inspire awe today. Many structures were also used and enriched during the Roman period.
Viofun’s Suggestion
Sit at the very top row of the theatre and take in the view of both the ancient city and the plain below. Imagine philosophers, astronomers, and artists once gazing at the same landscape from this hill. On your way back, you can visit the Bergama Museum to closely examine the artifacts unearthed from excavations.
