Istanbul Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts
The Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts is located in Istanbul’s Fatih district, in the historical Ibrahim Pasha Palace overlooking Sultanahmet Square. The museum houses artifacts spanning a wide geography and timeline—from the Seljuks to the Ottomans, from the Umayyads to the Abbasids. With rich collections of carpets, wood, ceramics, glass, stone craftsmanship, and manuscripts, it sheds light on both art and religious history.
Founded in 1914, the museum is the first in Turkey dedicated to Islamic art. Located in a 16th-century Ottoman palace, it features highlights such as a Seljuk mihrab, Mamluk glassware, Ottoman calligraphy, and world-renowned Anatolian carpets. It also includes everyday objects that reflect the social history of the Islamic world.
Viofun’s Recommendation
When you step into the carpet gallery, prepare to lose track of time. These carpets, silently displayed, feel like prayers woven centuries ago. After the museum, take a short walk through Sultanahmet Square to complete your spiritual journey among architectural masterpieces.
